Have you ever heard the quote, “If everything seems under control, you’re not moving fast enough?” This reminds me of today’s credit professional. We see today’s average credit department being asked to take on more and more responsibilities that are not specifically credit related. While this might be beneficial for the company, a credit person must remain focused, well educated, and informed to make the best credit decisions. If one is not connected and doesn’t understand the ebbs and flows of the industry they are serving, bad credit decisions will eventually result in problematic collection issues for the business. NACM is the designated resource for individuals to be a better credit person than they were the day before. The availability for reading material is non-stop, credit resource information in a Google-type system is readily available, and the interaction with other credit professionals is essential to developing a credit professional. Don’t get bogged down in the fast-paced work environment; take time for personal/professional development. Getting to your industry group each meeting, participating in educational opportunities, and interacting with other credit professionals are all helping to make you a better decision maker!
Show the value of your NACM membership to management by applying for a scholarship to any educational program, conference or class. There are multiple avenues to apply for scholarships. The NACM Northwest Foundation has an open application period of 3/1 to 3/31 for those interested in attending the NACM Credit Congress in June. If the conference isn’t for you, consider applying for any local educational class or webinar. In an effort to welcome other NACM members, the Foundation has recently developed scholarship seed money for the California and Nevada market areas too. Everyone is welcome to apply! You will find the application here: https://www.nacmcommercialservices.org/education/foundation. There are also opportunities for scholarships through NACM National. The information on those scholarships is located at: http://nacm.org/scholarship-foundation.html.
April is the month for NACM Commercial Services’ Member Meetings. Be sure to register to attend the April 19 breakfast and educational program in Portland or the April 20 educational program and lunch in Spokane this year. These meetings are a fantastic way to build your professional network. Programs in the California and Nevada markets are being developed this year as well. Make sure to watch the website for additions to the education calendar.
Our members come first in everything we do. Thank you for continuing to allow NACM Commercial Services to assist in making you the best credit professional you can be.
